Alright, I know you’ve all heard of biscuits and gravy…the traditional kind with a white gravy and bits of sausage?

(Here’s my sausage gravy recipe, if you’ve never tried this for breakfast!)

But what about chocolate gravy?

I know, I know…if you’re used to sausage gravy then chocolate gravy maybe sounds a bit…well…gross.

You just have to trust me!

There’s not much better than a warm homemade biscuit topped with thick, creamy chocolate gravy.

What is chocolate gravy?

Chocolate gravy is a very unique type of gravy that is typically served in the American South. It is most commonly served with fresh homemade biscuits for a special breakfast!

The gravy can be made several different ways. The typical method uses flour, cocoa powder, butter, and sugar.

It’s quick, simple, and the kids absolutely go crazy for it.

Ingredients:

This is a simple recipe without a lot of ingredients, which means that we want all of the components to be the best they can be.

Butter: We use salted. If you use unsalted, just add a touch more salt to the finished gravy.

Cocoa Powder: Both natural and Dutch-processed cocoa work well here. We prefer Hershey’s Special Dark for the deep, rich color and flavor.

Milk: Whole milk is best, but 2% will do just fine.

Biscuits: We linked our famous homemade biscuits up above, but if you want to go an even easier route, try our 7 Up Biscuits!

There were 7 of us kids and mom would make this for breakfast some times. Even with canned biscuits back in the early 50s.
When asked about gravy on my meal I always say if its chocolate gravy otherwise no thank you.
I’ve gotten many a strange look and always tell them hot chocolate pudding on top of biscuits instead of savory gravy. When my baby brother married a woman with her 3 children and his added. He would make them canned biscuits and vooked boxed chocolate pudding for Sunday breakfast or when they would beg for it. Love the memories!!! I’m 72 and the middle child.

I’m from Mississippi and my Aunt used to make homemade biscuits and chocolate gravy for me when I visited her. She also had homemade jams, jellies and preserves. She and my Grandma both had vegetable gardens, pecan, walnut and apple trees. Blueberry bushes etc. I remember sitting at Grandma’s kitchen table and snapping beans or crumbling pecans. Sorry, your recipes are stirring up a lot of great memories of days gone by. I have some of our family recipes. The ones I don’t have you seem to have! Yay! So glad I ran across your site!
