The secret to this Chocolate Chip Pizza is the cake mix topping. It gives it that dough-like texture. It’s topped with a generous sprinkle of sugar which gives it a crunchy top.
CHOCOLATE CHIP PIZZA
My oldest son turned 9 last week. I’ll be honest, there are days where I’m sitting in my living room by myself and I have moments where I think, “Holy cow, I have five kids.”
Don’t get me wrong, I always wanted a big family, but I wasn’t one of those people always squealing and wanting to hold other people’s babies. I was the youngest of ten kids so I didn’t have a ton of experience with babies since I was the baby of my own family.
Ioften wondered what kind of mom I would be. My husband and I waited 4 years to have kids after we were married. Even though all of our friends were pressuring us to have kids, we were enjoying our freedom and thought they just wanted us to have kids so we could be tied down and miserable like they were.😉 And then we tried getting pregnant and couldn’t. Joke was on us.
Years later we finally had our first baby. We struggled to figure out the whole parenthood thing. Google was our best friend. Why is there stuff coming out of my son’s nipple? Why is my son banging his head against his crib? Is it normalfor my baby’s eyes to cross?I had moments where nothing but my mother’s intuition (and help from above) could explain why I was directed to do the things I did. I was finally a mother.
I think about how much we have learned in 9 years…
…And how much more we have yet to learn.
Now if you’re on a diet you may want to look away. If you want to be a rock star at your next party…eyes on me. This pizza is your new best friend.
This pizza is the real deal. Supposedly this is like the Pizza Inn Chocolate Chip Pizza. The secret to this chocolate chip pizza is the cake mix topping. It gives it that dough-like texture. It’s topped with a generous sprinkle of sugar which gives it a crunchy top. You want to bake it until that sugar melts. As you can see, I pulled mine out a little too early before all of it had melted. Do as I say not as I do.I believe she was saying, “Oh wow Mom!”
I’m thoroughly convinced that everyone should be surrounded by a herd of easily impressed 2-year-olds. It’s great for the self esteem.
You will need a small army to eat this. Of course in the Denney house it was gone in a day.

Prep Time: 10 minutes mins
Cook Time: 12 minutes mins
Total Time: 22 minutes mins
Servings: 16 servings
Ingredients
- 1 (11 ounce) refrigerated thin crust pizza dough
- 1 (15.25 ounce) yellow cake mix
- 1 cup butter, (2 sticks, melted)
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees and lightly spray a 15"x10" pan with cooking spray.
Press the pizza dough into the pan extending 1/2 inch up the sides. Prick with a fork to prevent bubbles.
Bake for 3-4 minutes.
While crust is baking mix granulated sugar and brown sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.
Remove crust from oven. Mix the butter and cake mix together and sprinkle over the crust leaving a 1/2 inch margin on the sides. Press together gently.
Sprinkle with chocolate chips and press chips into the cake mix gently.
Evenly distribute the sugar mixture on top being careful to not sprinkle it on the pizza dough edges.
Bake for 7-12 minutes on an upper level rack in the oven. You want the sugar on top to melt creating a crust without cooking the crust on the bottom too much.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Seriously yum!! Made it the first time, and it was not crumbly, more of a spread. It was still very good. The next time, I only used 3/4C butter and the cake mix mixture was a perfect crumbly texture. This was a BIG hit for everyone in the family.
I did use a homemade crust—my pizza crust recipe makes 3, so we had 2 traditional pizzas and 1 dessert pizza. My kids all gave it double thumbs up!!-

I tried this with the crescent dough sheets because I found the pizza crust not sweet enough the first the I made it and it was so good! 🙂

Do you mix the cake mix? Or just use the powder?
-
Christy Denney — Reply
Just use the powder.

I used 1 cup of butter like the recipe read. After mixing the butter & cake the consistency was not of a crumbling nature. It said to crumble the mixture over the top of the cake but it was more like spread. I opened another cake mix box to firm it up. I thought maybe next time I would use 1/2 cup of butter instead. My sugar also didn’t melt on top but nonetheless, it still tasted very good.

Shoot. It is a wet crumble for sure but shouldn’t be overly wet.

Just made these for Dear Husband and Son. They said, “Make these anytime you want” I believe I might have precooked my pizza crust to long, they cake/crust didn’t stick together like I wanted, BUT it hasn’t stopped the guys from eating it. Thanks for the recipe

Is the butter supposed be actually melted, or just softened? We tried melted but it looks really runny…
-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
It’s supposed to melted. It shouldn’t be runny but definitely wet.

Yet ANOTHER home run. You make me look too good, but to be honest, I never take the credit. Although one of these days I may have to pass something off as my own just to feel good about myself 😉 … thanks, as always, for sharing – love your blog!

Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
Hey if you made it, you can totally get the credit!

Do you think you can substitute the butter for oil of some type (coconut or grapeseed)? I really want to make this NOW and I’m out of butter 🙁
-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
Ahh. I’m probably too late but I definitely think you could sub it. Butter always tastes better to me but in the end they are just both fats.

My son’s b’day is coming up and he has requested a cookie cake, do you think this would fit the bill and be good with vanilla ice cream on top??
-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
Yes! It would be great with vanilla ice cream and technically there’s cake mix in it, so it’s cake. If you want a more traditional one I have one here too. https://www.the-girl-who-ate-everything.com/2013/04/chocolate-chip-cookie-cake.html

Hi! I have this in the oven and I sure hope I am not screwing it up. I have had it in way longer than your recommended time. My sugar hasn’t melted while on the top shelf of oven, but the center is still jiggly. Do you remove it when it still jiggles? I guess I sort of thought this was like a gooey butter cake and it needs to be less jiggly. Does that make sense? My crust still seems to be OK so far.
-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
My oven does cook on the fast side. Did you use the same sized pan as me? Or smaller? The center shouldn’t be super jiggly.

I don’t think we would have left overs for the next day either. I will be making this as soon as my husband comes back in from work. I don’t think he would forgive me if I made it while he was gone. Thanks for sharing!

This will definitely be pinned….
Your picture looks more like a 9×13 pan and not a 15×10 pan. I know photos can be misleading but I’m still wondering if maybe you did use a 9×13. Please advise.-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
Annabelle,
It definitely is a 15×10 pan. It just has higher edges so it may look that way.

This sentence is amazing to me: “I’ll be honest, there are days where I’m sitting in my living room by myself and I have moments where I think, “Holy cow, I have five kids.””
You sit in your living room by yourself? AND have time to think??? I only have 2 kids, and I feel like I rarely have time to do either of those things!!! 😉
Also, my 5 year old is hoping to have this ‘pizza’ for his next birthday treat – it looks fantastic!
-
Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} — Reply
Haha Amy. I only sit by myself at night after they are all in bed.

In my life before kids, if somebody told me that I would have four, I would laugh long and hard….But he laughs best who laughs last. Of course, once you start having kids you realize how they make your life complete:)
This pizza is the perfect dessert for kids get togethers. And so easy, too. Heck, they can make their own!-

Holy cow! This looks so yummy! I completely understand about the whole waiting and having kids only to now end up with a huge family. We too waited 4 years, and then struggled to have kids. Now I’m pregnant with my fourth, and I look around and think how crazy but good things ended up.

Oh-em-gee this sounds and looks amazing. I know that if I make it, only I will devour it, as there will not be time to share it 🙂 in other words, I will hide in the pantry from my husband and eat it all, in one sitting,
