Mardi Gras is right around the corner. While I might not be celebrating in person, I will most definitely be celebrating with a bag of these Mardi Gras Muddy Buddies in hand. Cinnamon Chex cereal tossed in peanut butter, candy melts, and colored sugar. YUM! This dessert goes by many different names – Muddy Buddies, Puppy Chow, Muddy Munch, Reindeer Chow – whatever you call it, just make sure to call it GOOD! We both had zero self-control around this stuff!! ZERO!
How to Make Mardi Gras Muddy Buddies
This dessert/snack is super easy to make. Start with placing some Chex cereal in a large bowl. Melt peanut butter with candy melts. Toss the cereal and melted peanut butter together. Transfer to a ziplock bag and toss with powdered sugar. Once the cereal is coated, add some colored sugar and shake the bag once again. Pour the coated cereal onto some parchment paper or wax paper and let it cool.
- I used cinnamon Chex cereal to mimic the flavors of a King Cake.
- For more cinnamon flavor, add ground cinnamon to the melted peanut butter and candy melt mixture.
- You can use any flavor of Chex cereal or Crispix cereal in this recipe.
- I used green, yellow, and purple candy melts. I buy the candy melts at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels.
- The candy melts, especially the purple, are lighter, almost pastel. Feel free to add a few black candy melts to the mix for a deeper color.
- I toss the cereal in colored sugar to give it more color and sparkle. I buy the colored sugar at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels. Look for it in the baking aisle.
- How long do Muddy Buddies last? You can store cereal at room temperature for a few days, but you can alsorefrigerateit and it will last for up to a week.
Cinnamon Muddy Buddies for Mardi Gras
This makes a lot of muddy buddies. I mean, A LOT! Feel free to share some with friends. Grab a cellophane bag and tie it up with some ribbon and beads for a fun Mardi Gras treat! Whip up some jambalaya, blacked chicken, or red beans and rice for a delicious cajun feast!

Equipment:
Ingredients:
- 12 cups cinnamon Chex cereal, divided
- ¾ cup creamy peanut butter, divided
- 1½ Tbsp vegetable oil, divided
- 1 cup purple candy melts
- 1 cup green candy melts
- 1 cup yellow candy melts
- 2¼ cups powdered sugar, divided
- 3 gallon-sized ziplock bags
- ¼ cup purple sugar
- ¼ cup green sugar
- ¼ cup yellow sugar
Instructions:
Place 4 cups of Chex cereal in a large bowl. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup purple Candy Melts, ¼ cup peanut butter and ½ Tbsp vegetable oil. Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds, stir and cook in 15-second intervals until smooth.
Pour melted peanut butter mixture over cereal, toss to coat. Pour coated cereal into a gallon ziplock bag. Pour a third of the powdered sugar (¾ cup) into the ziplock bag and seal. Shake to coat cereal. Add purple sugar and shake to coat. Pour coated cereal onto parchment or wax paper and allow to set.
Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients and green and yellow candy melts and colored sugar.
Store in an airtight container.
