Why is Beth Israel closing? ›

Since 2013, Beth Israel has been part of the Mount Sinai Health System, which operates a number of major hospitals in Manhattan. Within a few years of taking over, the hospital system sought to close Beth Israel, saying it was a financial drain.

Newark Beth Israel ranked among the top 250 U.S. hospitals and is one of only five New Jersey hospitals on this prestigious list, which also includes The Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Massachusetts General.

The proposed closure date is July 12, 2024. After closure, patients will still be able to access care from across the Mount Sinai Health System, including through our extensive ambulatory platform downtown.

However, due to suburbanization and the 1967 Newark riots, most of the city's Jewish population left in the 1970s for other towns in Essex County, like Livingston, Millburn and South Orange. By 1977, it is estimated that only 500 Jews remained in the city.

Beth Israel is Hebrew for "House of Israel." The hospital was incorporated as Beth Israel Hospital on May 28, 1890, by a group of 40 Orthodox Jews on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, each of whom paid 25 cents to set up a hospital dedicated to serving immigrant Jews living in the tenement slums of the Lower East Side.

Dana-Farber and Beth Israel Deaconess will remain fully independent organizations, with separate boards of trustees, leadership, and fundraising. All philanthropic contributions to Dana-Farber will continue to fund Dana-Farber initiatives.
