Where to Buy Chicks

The best scrambled eggs recipe includes quality eggs. There's no better way to do it than to raise your own chicks and enjoy fresh eggs daily. If you're in the market for chicks, Meyer Hatchery has everything you need - a large variety of breeds, feed, and supplies for a smooth experience raising chickens and then farm-fresh eggs to prepare.

How Many Eggs Does a Chicken Lay a Day?

The answer to that depends on the breed of your chickens. There are also other factors involved and seasonal variations to consider. Hens typically produce fewer eggs in the winter when there is less available sunlight. However, there are ways to promote maximum egg production while keeping your hens happy.

The Best Scrambled Eggs Recipe for Kids

One benefit of homeschooling we take advantage of is that we are surrounded by practical life experiences. We don't have to have a lot of space designated for practicing real-world activities because it is inherent to the environment in which we live. These experiences are happening in real-time on a daily basis so we simply encourage participation.

This recipe is demonstrated with my 2.5 y.o. daughter. As a result, there are some steps in this recipe that I model, some that we complete together, and some that she completes on her own. This is going to vary for each child depending on their experience and abilities.

As a general rule, I tend to introduce new skills as she shows readiness. Then, I allow ample time for exploration and repetition. While this recipe may take just a few minutes for an adult, it will likely take longer for a young child. Allow plenty of time for this experience so the child can learn at their own pace and redirect as needed.

1. Wash Your Hands with Soap and Water

First and foremost, we wash our hands. Then we transition over to the prep area.

2. Put on an Apron

A couple of goals we aim for in our home in order to support positive independent work are accessibility of materials and freedom within limits. If that means adding a few low hooks or step stools then we are happy to do that.

3. Bring the Learning Tower & Ingredients to the Workspace

In order to get her scrambled egg breakfast up and running, my daughter helps gather the necessary items from the fridge and cupboard. She then climbs into herLearning Towerand gets to work.

Our Learning Tower is a bit bulkier and is not collapsible like some other towers on the market. However, it is also much sturdier and more durable as a result. We personally don't mind the size because it tucks in nicely at the end of our kitchen counter when not in use.

4. Crack the Eggs Over the Bowl

After we crack the eggs, our daughter likes watching them slide out of the shell and into the bowl. Provide a reminder as needed for handwashing with soap and water.

You may want to model or wash your hands alongside them to encourage proper technique. I know our kids like to rush through certain tasks that are taking time away from something they're excited about.

5. Add Cream or Milk to the Bowl

Next, we add the heavy cream or milk to the bowl.

6. Whisk the Eggs for the Best Scrambled Eggs Recipe

My daughter's favorite part of making scrambled eggs, by far, is using thewhisk. After she finishes whisking the eggs and milk, she likes to hold up the whisk and watch the egg mixture run down it and slowly drip into the bowl. It makes her giggle.

7. Heat Ghee in the Pan

Next, I turn the stove on medium and let the pan heat up before adding the ghee.

While I am at the stove, my daughter rips a piece of American cheese into little pieces to add in after the next step.

You'll notice that I don't turn the stove on before cracking the eggs. At this age, I think it's easier for kids to see related activities grouped together. If I turn the stove on way back at step 3, it's much further away from the step of adding the ghee to the pan and it may be more difficult to understand how to use the stove. This way she sees that the stove is turned on, it heats up the pan, and then the ghee is added to the hot pan.

8. Transfer the Egg Mixture to the Pan

My daughter usually helps me transfer the egg mixture to the pan.

9. Add the Cheese

This is also a good time to add salt as desired. We use salted ghee, so we do not add any additional salt to this recipe.

10. Stir the Eggs Frequently Until Cooked Through

The eggs are cooked when they are formed and there is no liquid left in the pan.

11. Remove From Heat

Finally, when the eggs are cooked and we are finished at the stove, she holds out her bowl and waits for me to scoop them from the hot pan into the bowl.

Don't forget to turn off the stove.

12. Serve the Best Scrambled Eggs Warm

Transfer the eggs to a plate or bowl and enjoy warm. We like to pair our eggs with child-sized utensils for my daughter and a glass of whole milk for each of us as it makes for one delicious breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Whole Milk or Heavy Cream
  • 1 slice American Cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee Butter
  • Salt as needed

Instructions

  • Wash hands with soap and water.

  • Put on your apron. Assist the child as needed with putting on their own appropriately-sized apron.

  • Bring the learning tower and ingredients to the workspace. The child can assist with gathering ingredients. This is a skill that will flourish with time spent in the kitchen.

  • Crack the eggs over the bowl one at a time and discard the shells. If your eggs are coming directly from your coop, you can model how to clean the eggs for your child first and invite them to participate. If you compost at home or your eggs are coming from your hens, kids can wash the eggshells in water and add to the compost or save them for feeding back to the hens. Wash hands with soap and water before returning to the recipe.

  • Use the measuring spoon to measure out the correct amount of milk and add it to the bowl. Demonstrate for the child or assist as needed.

  • Whisk the egg mixture, allowing the child several minutes to explore this exciting kitchen tool.

  • Turn the stove on medium heat. Wait a few minutes for the pan to heat up. Use the measuring spoon to add the correct amount of ghee to the pan. You may need the butter knife to help scrape it out. Again, model for the child how to use the measuring spoon or assist as needed.

  • The child can tear the American cheese into small pieces while the ghee melts into the pan.

  • Transfer the egg mixture to the pan.

  • Add the cheese and any additional salt to the pan.

  • Stir the eggs frequently while they cook. The more you stir, the creamier and more consistent they will turn out.

  • The eggs are cooked when they are formed and there is no liquid remaining in the pan. Remove them from heat and turn off the burner.

  • Transfer the eggs to a bowl and enjoy them while they are warm. For young children, depending on their level of experience, you may want to have the child hold their bowl while you transfer the eggs.

Notes

  • The same amount of heavy cream can be substituted for milk in this recipe.
