How to start The Forgotten Saga in AC Valhalla and go to Niflheim (2024)

A guide showing you how to start The Forgotten Saga story arc and go to Niflheim released with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Update 1.6.0!

Niflheim is a brand new mini-world available in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It was added with Update 1.6.0 on August 2nd 2022. This new story arc is available for free to all owners of the base game.

What is The Forgotten Saga

The Forgotten Saga is the name of a new quest chain and a new game mode in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It will teleport you to the dream world of Niflheim, where you will play as Odin himself once again.

The Forgotten Saga is not just the name of the new story arc. This whole new region is a new experience for all players. It follows the rules of the rogue-lite games where each time you are defeated, you will start from the beginning. But there’s a twist to that, of course.

Each time you are defeated, you will lose your current gear, but gain new currency, special new perks, new abilities and gear that you can tweak and modify to serve you better on your next playthrough of Niflheim.

More on that later. Now, let’s focus on how to actually get started!

Requirements to unlock Niflheim and The Forgotten Saga game mode and story

To be able to play the new game mode and access Niflheim, you will first have to qualify for it. The most basic requirement is to own the base game of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. You don’t need any of the expansions or the Season Pass. And, of course, you need to have your game updated to Patch 1.6.0.

You will need to reach England and advance through the story enough so that you unlock Asgard. For this you need to complete the quest called “A Wise Friend” and then start the next one “In Dreams”.

There are no power level requirements to enter and play through Niflheim. You will not be able to rely on the traditional gear and skills that you have earned and equipped in the base game. In Niflheim, you will be given new gear and abilities to choose from and earn as you play.

Get the plants Valka has asked you to pick up for her and help her make the potion. Drink the potion and fall asleep. This will teleport you to Asgard as Eivor dreams. In the dream world you play as Odin.

Once you are in Asgard, you can leave it after you complete the very first mission you get by entering this world. Visit the Great hall and help protect it from the invaders.

Next, open your map and click on the “eye symbol” in the top left corner on the map to wake up and return back to your settlement Ravensthorpe in England.

After you complete the requirements listed above, you will receive a notification letting you know that a new game mode has been unlocked for you.

A new quest will be added to your quest log under a new tab “The Forgotten Saga”. The quest is called “A Gift from the Otherworld”.

Head to the eastern part of Ravensthorpe, where the festival grounds are. Look for a new NPC – Everold. He is waiting for you to start a short cinematic cutscene.

Here is the full cinematic of the starter mission and the dialogue between Eivor, Valka and Everold:

Everold will show you a unique item he has crafted – the Mead Horn of Suttungr. This item is from another world. Eivor, naturally, will wonder if Everold can craft other items if given proper descriptions and recipes.

In the middle of the conversation, Valka will arrive and join you. She will be against such ideas as “trafficking in visions”, but she will agree to help in the end.

At the end of the cinematic, a brand new building will be constructed in Ravensthorpe for you – Everold’s Workshop.

Unlike other buildings in your settlement, this one will not cost you resources. It will be located near the spot where you met Everold and spoke to him and Valka.

How to travel to Niflheim

To travel to Niflheim, enter Everold’s Workshop and drink the potion that Valka has prepared and left inside for you. You will find it on a wooden barrel next to Everold’s bed.

A second short cinematic will play after you drink the potion. Eivor will ask Everold to be discreet about what is happening inside the tent. After a quick fade through the skies, you will be teleported into the dream world of Niflheim to play as Odin.

You will start at Odin’s Camp. The world map will not be available at first. Reach the leap-of-fate spot ahead of you, jump down to enter

As you swim up from the well that you just jumped into from Odin’s Camp, you will enter Kaldstat. From this point, the game will start slowly and patiently feeding you tutorials about the new mechanics and gameplay features available in Niflheim.

The world map will now become available, but of course, since this is your first visit, you will not be able to see it. When you are defeated and forced to start from the beginning, you will keep the portion of the map that you have discovered so far.

From this point your real adventures in Niflheim begin. You will have to make decisions each time you are defeated about your new gear equipment. Throughout the map you will be able to pick up various gear upgrades, new weapons, heal yourself at shrines and so on.

I have a bit of good news – not every death will result in a restart of the adventure. If you happen to fall down or… you know… make a leap of fate where the game doesn’t intend for you to do, you will be brought back up on the cliff from where you fell or jumped.

This game mode could be great fun or a big annoyance depending on your playstyle. Each time you start in Niflheim, a random selection of gear will be given to you. You will be able to modify it through vendor items and rewards from your gameplay, but if you enjoy only a specific type of weapon and gameplay style, you will have to do some grinding first before you are able to replicate it in this new dream world.

How to exit Niflheim and return to England

If you want to take a break from The Forgotten Saga story arc on Niflheim, you can do that from Odin’s Camp.

Head to the shrine in the northern end and click on the “Wake Up” button when it appears as you approach it.

When you exit the dream world through this button, your current progress and all items and currencies you have earned will be kept safe for you until you return. You can travel to and from Niflheim as often as you want.

As you exit Niflheim for the first time, another cinematic will play and Everold will start offering you cosmetic items and new gear. You can purchase these things with the currency called “Dreams”.
