Niflheim is one of the Nine Realms you can visit in God of War Ragnarok, but contains only a small sample of places you can explore during your adventures. Despite this, it does contain some valuable things to find. You automatically gain access to this realm once you use the Mystic Gateway outside of Sindri's House. This page contains an overview of all of Niflheim's regions, including collectible locations, side quests, secrets, and optional boss fights in the realm.

SPOILER WARNING

Since three of the Niflheim regions cannot be visited until much later in the game, BEWARE OF SPOILERS IN THIS SECTION!

Niflheim Summary
Nornir Chests - 1Legendary Chests - 7Berserker Gravestones - 1Flowers - 2

Niflheim is the realm of mist, and a place that Kratos visited during his last adventure. This time around he's in a colder part of the realm, far from the poisonous mists of Ivaldi's Workshop. Here Kratos can use a combat training arena to practice and level up his existing Skills, as well as tend to a mysterious side quest rewarding you for slaying Odin's Ravens.

Notably, there are two regions (The Eternal Cavern and Pale Meadows) that have no Collectibles in them at all. Two others, Mist Fields and Aesir Prison Wreckage, are not available until a very long while into the game.

The Raven Tree - The Eyes of Odin

The Raven Tree is the primary landmark of this region, and is where the souls of Odin's Ravens go to after Kratos kills them throughout the other Realms. Head to our Ravens page to find them all!

At the foot of the tree are six Legendary Chests, which are unlocked after freeing certain amounts of Ravens. The first three will reward you with pieces of an armor set, while the other three contain the most powerful Runic Attacks in the game.

Once you've claimed all six rewards, you'll be able to engage in an optional boss encounter in the Niflheim Sparring Arena.

Niflheim Sparring Arena

The Niflheim Challenge Arena is a unique location just opposite Brok's shop, with a large monument in the middle. Similar to the Muspelheim Challenges, Kratos can interact with it to initiate multiple challenges.

The difference is that these are specifically training challenges to practice your skills, meaning they are endless waves of enemies who give no XP or Hacksilver. You can choose from one of five themes of enemies, the latter three you'll have to unlock:

  1. Draugr - Unlocked automatically
  2. Grims - Unlocked automatically
  3. Light Elves - Complete Groa's Secret
  4. Einherjar - Complete Forging Destiny
  5. Hel-Walkers - Complete Reunion

The most notable part about the Sparring Arena is that you can use them to grind out Mod Tokens for Kratos' weapons. Mod Tokens are minor tweaks to Kratos' skills that allow them to be improved in a minor way, including higher Damage, Stun damage or Element damage, protecting Kratos from damage and stagger during the skill, or increasing the amount of charge the skill adds to the Permafrost / Immolation meters.

This would normally take a long time to unlock, as you have to perform the move in question a certain number of times. However the Niflheim Sparring Arena spawns endless amounts of basic enemies, letting you perform the moves to your heart's content so you can unlock the Mod Tokens!

Frozen Caverns - Legendary Chest-U 1

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Runic Summon - Bitter Squirrel

This Legendary Chest is untracked, and is not required for 100% completion.

This Legendary Chest is found as you explore the Frozen Caverns as Atreus, and is the only collectible in this region. At a certain point you’ll drop down a ledge and see a grapple point on your right to cross a gap.

Ignore it for a moment and head around the frozen pillar: up the ledge will be the Legendary Chest.

The chest contains the Bitter Squirrel Runic Summon, which summons Ratatoskr’s Bitter spectral form to dig up a Healthstone. Upgrades will have Bitter dig up multiple Healthstones! Notably, Bitter has a sassy personality, especially if you don’t actually use any of the items he digs up.

Nine Realms in Bloom - Frostfinger

  • Prerequisite: Talk to Ratatoskr after completing The Path quests

advertisem*nt

The Frostfinger flower is found in Niflheim’s Mist Fields, however the Mystic Gateway for this region does not appear until you’ve completed The Path quests. Further, you must also unlock travel to Mist Fields: you can do this by talking to Ratatoskr at Sindri’s House.

Once you’ve met these requirements, travel to the Mist Fields Mystic Gateway in South-Eastern area of Helheim. As soon as you arrive, look left and you can find the Frostfinger flower, among the swords and skulls.

Berserker Gravestone - Skjothendi the Unerring

  • Prerequisite: Talk to Ratatoskr after completing The Path quests

This Berserker Gravestone is only accessible after you’ve completed all The Path Quests, then talked to Ratatoskr at Sindri’s House. Once you’ve done so, travel to the Mist Fields Mystic Gateway in the South-Eastern area of Helheim, then backtrack all the way to the end to find the Gravestone.

  • Skjothendi the Unerring

Dreamshade - Asgard

advertisem*nt

  • Prerequisite: Complete The Path quests
  • Location: Niflheim - Aesir Prison Wreckage

Like all collectibles in the Aesir Prison, you cannot access it until you’ve completed all quests in The Path. Once you’ve done this, look for the wreckage to the East of The Raven Tree that you can climb down into.

Once in, you’ll need to battle enemies of all stripes while using chain levers to make your way down into the prison. Once you’re on the bottom floor, check the Southern corner for a gate you can open. In the room inside will be the Dreamshade.

Aesir Prison Wreckage - Nornir Chest 1

This Nornir Chest is found on the second floor (that is, second-from-the-top floor) of the Aesir Prison, however getting to it is one of the more brain-tickling puzzles in the game, since it’s blocked by walls. First, you’ll want to clear out the tower first of any enemies and use the two Wind Vent frames to help swing down. You can move the Wind Vents using the chain cranks.

Eventually, you’ll make your way to the bottom floor. We’ll start our instructions here to act as a common reset point.

For clarity, we’ll refer to the floors in ascending order. So the bottom floor is Floor 4, while the top floor is Floor 1.

First, look for the F Rune’s idol sitting on the ice in the middle square space of this floor, as shown in the picture above.

Next, jump up the Eastern swing pole to get from Floor 4 to Floor 3 (you’ll be jumping South-East).

As soon as you make it up, look left to the North-East to spot a room you can enter: the T Rune’s idol will be sitting in the right-hand windowsill. If you’ve not opened the gate into this room, you’ll also have to kill a Dark Elf inside.

If you’re also interested in the Legendary Chest and Relic here, you should look for the chain crank in the North-Western corner of the room and use it to raise a Wind Pole frame up as high as it’ll go.

Now head to the Southern corner of the floor, where you should find a blue-framed window you can vault through.

Inside the room, turn around and look up: you’ll see a cracked wall you can breach through with the Blades of Chaos. This will get you up to Floor 3.

When you get to the top, look North to spot a gate you can yank open via a grapple point. This will be where both the R Rune and the Nornir Chest are! Smash the idol, then open the chest.

Aesir Prison Wreckage - Legendary Chest 1

advertisem*nt

  • Contains: Companion Accessory - Nocked Proficiency

This Legendary Chest is found on the top floor of the Aesir Prison, however getting to it is one of the more brain-tickling puzzles in the game, since it requires you to get to a portion of the fourth floor you don't initially have access to.

To get up here, follow the instructions described in the Nornir Chest section above. When you get to the Nornir Chest's location, look North to spot a gate you can yank open via a grapple point. It’ll be opposite the local Nornir Chest.

Head through the gate and look right through the opening: you’ll now be able to climb up to the Legendary Chest on Floor 1 using the swing pole you moved earlier! If you want to access the rest of Floor 1, use the grapple point here to open another gate.

The chest contains the Nocked Proficiency accessory for your companion, making every third Runic Arrow fired have an additional arrow.

Aesir Prison Wreckage - The Broken Prison

On the bottom floor of this prison you will find Tyr behind a cell gate, it turns out he is still alive, and was imprisoned in Asgard the whole time. Miraculously, the destruction of the realm threw him across the realms and into Niflheim (though still confined to his cell). Recuing him will conclude the favor "The Broken Prison."

To the left of the chest near a corpse is an easily-missed Relic: Motsognir’s Call. It creates a shockwave that deals a high amount of Stun to surrounding enemies.
